Shepard Fairey created the Obama hope poster influencing the masses

Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey is an American street artist, graphic designer and illustrator as well as an avid activist, I really love his work and this blog will quickly look at some of the important posters he has created that have influenced millions.

Shepard became first known for his skateboarding influenced Obey stickers and posters based on the wrestler Andre the Giant, and by his use of repetition over America the image became an icon.

As well as his Graphic Design Fairey is a street artist creating street murals and graffiti across America which became very popular especially within the skate scene.

One of his most famous posters was the Obama Hope poster which was made during the run up to the election which became such an influential poster for Obama that his opposing parties sued Shepard Fairey as they claimed the poster was actually influencing people to vote for Obama. The case didn’t win but it just added more popularity for the design as well as Obama.

I really like the simplistic style and use of few colours (usually red blue and white) which creates the portrait or image and it works really well giving a modern but propaganda feel to it. I also like the simple slogan that runs along the posters usually a single word that can express what the image is saying also.

Since the Obama poster Fairey has also created posters in this style for many famous musicians, artists and activists as well as world problems and he fast became one of my favourite artists at the moment.

His new poster which came out after Trump was elected is another call to arms for the people to listen and is clear he is against Trump and his views. It includes a muslim woman wearing a head garment with the American flag on it and the slogan ‘We the people’ which is a call for unity and that America shouldn’t judge or attack people because of their views, religious beliefs or how they look.

Again it has become another iconic poster which is being used worldwide to show unity and love towards humanity and I really the point it makes and the design in general.
